SUMMARY:Walk in Beauty
DESCRIPTION:Walk in Beauty\nSunday\, April 6th\nFacilitator: Ted Riskin \nThe Navajo concept of walking in beauty encapsulates a philosophy of living in harmony\, balance\, and reverence for the natural order. It is a way of life that integrates spiritual\, physical\, and emotional well-being\, emphasizing the interconnectedness of all things. This philosophy encourages individuals to strive for balance in their relationships with themselves\, others\, and the natural world\, often through ceremonies and practices that restore harmony when it is lost. Walking in beauty is a continuous journey of aligning oneself with the rhythms of existence\, fostering peace\, and embodying the beauty of creation in every step. \n(Walk in Beauty is also a salon where you don’t need an appointment.)

SUMMARY:What's Going On?
DESCRIPTION:What’s Going On?\nSunday\, February 23rd\nFacilitator: Ted Riskin \nA friend of mine told me he is taking a news fast. I replied that it was a tempting idea\, but “I want to know what’s going on.” \nReally?\nWhile it might be important to stay informed\, is the news really what’s going on? \nOr is it: \nThe sun comes up every day.\nSeasons change.\nPlants are growing.\nOur bodies are breathing in and out.\nWe are in relationship with each other.\nPeople are serving each other – how many contributed to me having breakfast today? \nAnd once again we are gathering in community to move our bodies in harmony and appreciate the gift of music. \nWhat’s going on for you?

SUMMARY:Outer and Inner Direction
DESCRIPTION:Outer and Inner Direction\nSunday\, January 19th\nFacilitator: Ted Riskin \nTo live in community\, we must respond to the needs of others. \nTo live with fulfillment\, we must respond to our inner needs. \nHow do we balance the two?  Can dance help us do that? \nDon’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who come alive.\n— Howard Thurman

SUMMARY:Whining Welcomed Here
DESCRIPTION:Whining Welcomed Here\nSunday\, November 10th\nFacilitator: Ted Riskin \nOur culture of rugged individualism shames us for whining or feeling sorry for ourselves. But isn’t what we call “whining” just parts of us that need to be witnessed in our pain and sadness? Why should we deny that\, especially when many of us have recently suffered losses? Let’s provide that necessary compassionate witnessing on Sunday. \nYou can hear some of Ted’s mixes at https://www.mixcloud.com/tarisk/.

SUMMARY:Is There Anywhere to Get?
DESCRIPTION:Is There Anywhere to Get?\nSunday\, September 15th\nFacilitator: Ted Riskin \nTo travel is to be alive\, but to get somewhere is to be dead.\n― Alan Watts \nWestern culture is linear and hierarchical.  We should improve\, grow\, and get better.  We should accumulate more learning\, health\, and wealth.  We should reach the goal\, score the touchdown\, and accomplish the objective. We should work hard to get from Point A to Point B. \nWhat if reality is actually circular?  If you keep heading east\, you end up west\, so what have you accomplished?  What if there is nowhere to get?  What if life is just a dance? \nYou can hear some of Ted’s mixes at https://www.mixcloud.com/tarisk/.

DESCRIPTION:The Present Is Not a Result of the Past\nSunday\, January 7th\nFacilitator: Ted Riskin \nJust as a movie creates the illusion of continuity by displaying 24 discrete frames per second\, our experience of continuity from one present moment to the next is an illusion and optional.  As we start a new year\, we can have a new start to our lives.\n\nYou can hear some of Ted’s mixes at www.mixcloud.com/tarisk.

SUMMARY:What's Wrong? What's Right?
DESCRIPTION:What’s Wrong? What’s Right?\nSunday\, November 26th\nFacilitator: Ted Riskin \n\nWhich draws your attention more?  The pretty painting?  The cute doggy?  Or the hole in its head?\n\nThat hole covers only about 3% of the area of the painting\, but we are compelled to focus there.  Our brains evolved to fixate on what is wrong\, because it helped us survive.  But that tendency thwarts our ability to feel contentment.\n\nGiving thanks is a simple way to rebalance our focus and feel more happy.

SUMMARY:Trust Fall
DESCRIPTION:Trust Fall\nSunday\, November 12th \nGuest DJ: Sara Bensman\nSupporting Facilitator: Marta Martin \nRemember that moment when you were caught off guard? Maybe it was a loss or maybe you received unexpected news. Suddenly the ground fell away beneath your feet. You hung suspended in midair for a long moment\, untethered to your known world. The wind moved through and blew away everything that was extraneous. You were unsure of what would happen next. Eventually you landed. Your body dropped to the ground again like the kernel falling into the winnowing basket. And you reoriented yourself to this new reality. \nLet’s expand that moment to a dance. Let’s witness how we navigate the uncertainty and explore the sensation of releasing our expectations. Let’s discover what we trust when we fall. \n

SUMMARY:BodyWonder
DESCRIPTION:BodyWonder\nFriday\, September 29th\nGuest DJ: Jeannie Adair\nSupporting Facilitator: Ted Riskin\n\nOur bodies\, these magnificent temples of existence\, gift us with the ability to see\, hear\, touch\, move and feel the earth under our feet.\nLet’s honor them with deep appreciation and gratitude for these extraordinary vessels that carry us through life. Our bodies are truly wonders of nature\, intricate and harmonious systems that allow us to experience the richness of existence.\n\n\nDid you know:\n\nEach foot contains 26 bones and 33 joints?\nThese bones work together like a finely tuned orchestra\, allowing us to walk\, run\, and dance with grace.\nOur digestive system is incredibly long.\nIf you were to stretch out the intestines\, they would measure about 20 to 25 feet in length!\nThere are approximately 37.2 trillion cells in the our bodies\, and each has its own specific function.\nOn average\, our hearts beat around 100\,000 times a day\, which equates to approximately 2.5 billion heartbeats over the course of an average human lifespan.\n\n\nLet’s appreciate the complexity and symphony of our body’s systems\, working in harmony\, granting us the gift of existence.\nOur bodies are masterpieces\, and as we move and dance\, let’s honor and celebrate the wonder that is your body.

DESCRIPTION:Invitation: 10 Things I Learned from My Cat \n\nIt’s OK to communicate my wants and needs.\nWhen bad things happen\, like being accidentally locked in the garage\, I don’t need to freak out or grumble. I can just make the best of things\, perhaps looking for interesting animals\, until someone opens the door.\nWhen a part of me says my cat loves me and another part says she’s just using me for food and chin scratches\, I get to choose which one to believe.\nWorrying about what people think of me is optional.\nWorrying about the future is optional.\nThinking is optional.\nEating something that dropped on the ground won’t kill me.\nI can catch up on sleep during the day if I want.\nI don’t need to be ashamed about bodily functions.\nAlways keep breathing.\nIt’s OK if I don’t know how to count to 10.\n\nMany of these lessons can be practiced on the dance floor. \nYou can hear some of Ted’s mixes at https://www.mixcloud.com/tarisk/.

SUMMARY:The Power of Music
DESCRIPTION:Invitation: The Power of Music \nI think music\, out of all that we can do\, at least artistically\, is the great indicator that something else is going on\, something unexplained\, because it allows us to experience genuine moments of transcendence.\n— Nick Cave \nIn an early version of the myth of Eurydice\, she is the wife of Orpheus\, a master musician. Upon being bitten by a viper\, she dies and descends into the Underworld. Orpheus is grief-stricken but finds a way to go there\, and by playing his music and singing so beautifully\, he softens the hearts of the rulers of Hades\, and is allowed to take her back to the land of the living. \nHow do you experience the power of music? \nYou can hear some of Ted’s mixes at https://www.mixcloud.com/tarisk/. \n
