Chaos Magician

He wasn’t just my best friend. He was my brother. Not by blood—but by something deeper. Soul recognition. Like we were carved from the same piece of sky.

We met on a bright June day back in 2016, at a little breakfast spot in Asheville. Funny how something so ordinary ends up being the start of everything. We clicked instantly. Motorcycles, weird old philosophy books, emotional chaos, the works. Gurdjieff, Jung, Osho—we weren’t into small talk, we were into soul talk.

Over the years, we discovered just how similar we were. The same hopes. The same fears. The same wiring, but also the same wild-hearted love for this strange, beautiful life. He was the first person I ever told my darkest secrets to—the kind of stories you lock up deep. And he didn’t flinch. Just held space like a goddamn lighthouse.

We traveled together, we drank and laughed and read each other poems while listening to Bon Iver and Nine Inch Nails and Miles Davis. We howled at the moon like two overgrown boys trying to out-feel the universe. He showed me his shadow, and I showed him mine. But more than that—we showed each other the light. That deep, radiant kind of light that only comes when someone truly sees you.

And man, could he push the limits of reality.

Once, in Brooklyn, we went to see this ambient piano genius. The line outside the venue was insane, and we had crappy tickets. But he walks right up to a group of six total strangers and somehow convinces them to let us cut the line. Just like that. Then we sit in someone else’s seats—front and center—and when the actual ticket holders show up, he hands them our tickets and says, completely calm, “Just go talk to the ushers—they’ll fix it.” And they did. They just walked away like he cast a spell on them.

Later that night, he sang a Radiohead song at a Korean karaoke bar. “Fake Plastic Trees.” And by the time he finished, there were ten women in the room, no joke, who had drifted in like moths. He didn’t even flirt. Just talked and laughed like the world was brand new and made just for him. Like he was playing the simulation and the rest of us were catching up.

He could push the edge without ever being caught. Bend time, bend people, bend the whole damn vibe—and do it with a smirk and a shoulder shrug.

He left this world on March 25th.

And there’s a part of me that still refuses to believe it. Still hears his voice when I walk alone. Still sees his face when I’m laughing too hard at nothing. Still feels him in the space between breaths.

If love could’ve saved him, he’d still be here. But he gave me enough love to last this lifetime.
