Reaching Out: Wild Goose & AMC at LEAF

Dancing with the Wild Goose

Wild Goose FestivalAs we continue sharing dance with other communities, we’ll also share what it is like to dance with a different crowd. On Saturday, July 11, several AMC facilitators joined dancers at the Wild Goose Festival for the third consecutive year. Below, facilitators Steven Jones and Marilyn Gaunt talk a little about what that was like.

“There is something particularly moving about bringing a dance to the Wild Goose Festival, and I felt honored to present for a third year. Following two inspiring group conversations, one on the rights and care of Veterans and another on the topic of Black Lives Matter, the energy of protest and empathy and universal struggle for social justice and equality mixed into the movement we shared together under the orange tent on a hot summer day with just the tiny promise of rain in the air. Dancing to African rhythms that slowly merged into the sounds of Celtic acoustics felt right. Dance as protest; dance as communion; dance as prayer.”

A discussion with Bree Newsome and Jimmy Tyson at Wild Goose 2015 (Presbyterian News Service)

“In keeping with all of the challenging issues facing us in the headlines every day, this year’s festival focused on Activism. Speakers were inspirational and hopeful, whether discussing Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome or Civil Rights.

We had a sweet tent-covered space that was open and inviting. A small group of people gathered, including some familiar faces from the two previous years. Children loved the freedom of the outdoor setting and and adults were thrilled to move to the energetic rhythms and beats. Dancing barefoot on the ground is awesome!”

Wild Goose describes themselves as “a community gathered at the intersection of spirituality, justice, music and the arts.”
