Facilitator's Invitation

Volition

Sunday, May 18th
Facilitator: Marta Martin

Volition is the capacity of individuals to make conscious choices and decisions. Volition in our dance practice means bringing conscious intention to a space that often celebrates spontaneity. It’s the art of choosing how, why, and when to move—not just letting your body react, but letting your will guide your expression.

Choosing Presence
Volition is: “I will be present.”

Moving with Intention
We might set an internal intention: to explore fluidity, express grief, reclaim power, or simply listen
Volition is: “I move to express, not escape.”

Directing Energy
Choosing where our energy goes—upward, outward, inward, grounded.
Volition is: “I choose where my energy flows.”

Honoring Boundaries
Volition is: “I have agency in stillness and motion.”

Transforming Emotion Through Choice
You feel rage or joy rising—but how you embody it is yours to craft.
Volition is: “I choose how emotion becomes movement.”

In free form dance, volition doesn’t kill spontaneity—it gives it depth. It’s the silent architecture behind authentic, empowered movement.

Volition is the line between living passively and living deliberately.

Facilitator Notes

Marta has been part of AMC since she moved to Asheville from Surfside, FL in 2008. She has been teaching movement for over 20 years, using music and movements from around the world.

She loves to motivate people to find freedom in their bodies so they can dance to the spirit of the music.

“I was dancing in my father’s arms before I was walking. When I dance, I feel ageless. Through movement I have found my inner power. My light shines brightest on the dance floor.”
